The Revolutionario taco chef is switching gears.
You’ve likely heard about Farid Zadi by now. The always energetic North African chef has been doing guerrilla-style pop-ups and food festival events for years, making a name for himself as a master of the reimagined taco. Now he’s moving into the much more conservative confines of Malibu.
The project, to be called Le Village Cafe, is slated to arrive in as little as a month or so, and comes complete with an active beer and wine license already intact. The address on that paperwork, you’ll notice, is for the area known colloquially as Malibu West, a sort of shopping spot higher up the coast, at the upper edge of Zuma Beach.
It’s long been rumored that Zadi would be making a move up the beach with a new restaurant, but little did anyone know just how, well … structured this one would be. Zadi’s current home, Revolutionario Tacos in South L.A., is a hodgepodge space of reclaimed dining chairs and patio space, where locals can wander in and try anything on the menu for cheap.
Chinelli Associates are behind the rustic-looking restaurant space, which should be ready to serve by mid-March. Inside the room is cozy and clean, with little pretense (no white tablecloths here) and a warm farmhouse appeal. The plan is to serve three square meals a day starting at 6 a.m., working produce-forward New American dishes.
Owner Francois Clausse, who hails from Europe, is behind the project, and hopes to replicate the success with a few other follow-up locations in short order. Zadi will be on site at least for dinner most nights, working the kitchen himself.
