With a wry turn of the head, Hailey Baldwin blows a quick kiss for the camera, a vintage Metallica tee slashed down the front offsetting her shockingly fresh-faced glow. “I feel good. I’ve just been resting and trying not to overdo it this week,” she tells us. “It’s so cold, I don’t want to do anything! I’m excited to be here, though.”
We’re backstage at Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2016 show, a romantic maritime blowout that staged an enormous cruise ship in the middle of the Park Avenue Armory. Here, perched in a makeup chair behind the scenes, Baldwin is having a dusting of gold glitter applied to her lids to conjure the free-spirited mood that makeup artist Pat McGrath has dreamed up for the occasion. “I wanted to give a little ornamentation to the face,” McGrath explains. “There’s a lot of embellishment in the collection—it’s ultrafeminine, very gorgeous.” For her part, Baldwin turns to admire the metallic sheen in the mirror. “I love it, I think it’s a nice little pop,” she says.
It’s a sharp contrast to the model’s everyday beauty approach, which follows a “simpler is better” philosophy: a clean face every night, religiously buffed with a Clarisonic, and frequent trips to the dermatologist. As for that supernatural glow, not much is needed. “Honestly, it’s kind of just my skin tone!” she says. “I keep my makeup simple and just fresh, fresh”—though she confesses a weakness for Becca highlighter, dabbed lightly on the cheeks, down the nose, and at the lip, she says, gesturing to her cupid’s bow. Hair is equally natural: “I don’t do blowouts, just a rough dry, and Bumble and Bumble Salt Spray gives good texture.” Her final word of advice for wintertime beauty? “Stay inside!”
