An upcoming all-day contender starts with a James Beard semifinalist
Culver City’s Platform project keeps getting stronger, with news today of a casual all-day newcomer slated for the far corner called Hayden. The prime new modernist property offers some big square footage right out by the former Roberta’s Pizza pop-up — complete with ample patio space, high ceilings, and a long marble bar.
Hayden is primarily the work of Ari Kolender, a James Beard semifinalist who started in Los Angeles at places like Red Medicine and Providence before making a name for himself in Charleston, South Carolina. He decamped from Leon’s Oyster Shop there in the summer of 2015, and has been slowly working on bringing the bones of Hayden to life in Los Angeles. Luckily he’ll be bringing a fair bit of Charleston sensibility with him, which means fresh oysters and casual summer vibes.
The idea with Hayden is to be an all-day space for workers, locals, and beyond, which means a shifting direction as the day moves on. In the morning there will ultimately be coffee and pastries, though at the outset the plan is for casual lunches with a seafood and produce-heavy lean, plus beer and wine from sommelier Anthony Cailan. Dinners will provide a bit more service with a sit-down, lingering European appeal, though a long stand-up marble bar will also work for gathering with friends.
Hayden is currently in construction mode, but things are moving fast. The long dual-sided banquettes that run down the middle of the open room are coming in this week, and the finishing touches will come in soon after. They’re hiring up for a variety of positions in both front and back of house as well, so if you’re looking for work, you can hit the team up directly. Otherwise, prepare to drink and dine by the end of June, most likely.
