Here’s How to Steal Lou Doillon’s French Girl Tour Style

Here’s How to Steal Lou Doillon’s French Girl Tour Style
You know those French girl tropes that may at this point be eliciting something along the spectrum of “heavy sigh” and “aggravated wheeze”? Well, they’re not solely an editorial conspiracy to make us Americans feel eternally less-than; those well-worn clichés do come from someplace. Case in point? The inimitable Lou Doillon, whose deliciously imperfect hair does call to mind an even more rakish version of Mum and O.G. Gallic dream girl Jane Birkin (great bangs, as it turns out, just might be genetic), and whose irreverent looks are a mishmash of designer and vintage.

With her sophomore album, Lay Low, poised to drop on February 5, the chanteuse has mounted a tour that finds her zigzagging the globe, from Perth to Poland, Tokyo to Hamburg, well into April. Even if none of the gigs are landing in a city near you, one need only skim Doillon’s Instagram page to get a taste of what fans are in for, sartorially speaking. Her ensembles both on- and off-stage are pretty but never precious, often bringing together seemingly disparate things, such as a retro tablecloth floral with lug-soled boots or an O.A.P.-worthy cardigan. There’s hardly a look in the bunch that’s not calling out for IRL application: Witchy, ’70s-leaning ankle boots and skinny jeans come to life in the singer’s spare, evocative drawings, while a gold lamé blazer would look every bit as nice at brunch as it does backstage. Above, our favorite takes on style à la Doillon to shop now.
