Denoting regality and power, purple is a bold color historically used to tint the hems of emperors’ capes or associated with modern-day larger-than-life figures, from Michelle Obama to Prince. For us laywomen, it’s a shade that tends to be a little trickier to successfully pull off, requiring a bit of extra thought and a daring sensibility. But for a risk-taking actress like Lupita Nyong’o, who also happens to reign supreme over the red carpet, it is simply a hue fit for a queen. Nyong’o wore a lilac Escada wrap coat tied around her waist, hints of her plum Michael Kors Collection frock peeking from underneath, and SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker pumps to match. But as she sat down to discuss the upcoming Broadway premiere of her play, Eclipsed, Nyong’o shrugged off the coat to unveil the playful side of the sophisticated look, its cutaway design revealing flashes of her taut stomach and collarbone. With her pint-size Afro pinned back, the actress spoke eloquently of diversity in Hollywood, reminding us why we remain her biggest loyalists.
