Northern Cafe Takes Over Where Short-Lived M Con Left Off Along Beverly

Northern Cafe Takes Over Where Short-Lived M Con Left Off Along Beverly

Dumplings are coming to Beverly Grove in a big way

Looks like a flip of sorts for Beverly Boulevard, as the quiet M Con has closed to make room for a surprising new tenant: Northern Cafe. The still-fresh corner location at Beverly and Alfred is down for a bit of construction, but signage for Northern Cafe is already up.

M Con was a second effort from owner Jeffrey Ko (he also owns a place in Hollywood), who tried to bring an eclectic menu of sandwiches on scallion buns, grain bowls, and salads to the area, but the place never seemed to catch on with a wider audience. Add in all the competition in that area, as well as the massive upcoming changes to the Beverly Center, and ultimately M Con hit the skids after just a year.

So now comes Northern Cafe, a Chinese restaurant with its backbone in the San Gabriel Valley but an outlet in Westwood. That iteration has been doing brisk business since basically day one, which puts this new Beverly address in a prime position to succeed. Perhaps the nearest direct dumpling competition comes from ROC on West Third Street, or Bao Dim Sum House.

No word just yet on when Northern Cafe will emerge at the corner of Beverly and Alfred, but it’s probably a safe assumption to check back in the summertime. Until then, there’s always the quirky new dumpling spot Little Highness in Beverly Hills to know about.
