Alessandro Michele’s touch can quite literally be described as golden: The hands that are giving new life to Gucci are as ring-laden as those seen in Renaissance portraits. Michele’s penchant for man jewelry extends to the runway. For Spring, male and female models flaunted shimmering gems piled on in pretty profusion. Their multitude is expressive of a collector’s insatiable desire for (vintage-y) baubles rather than bling. This dress-to-impress style—diamonds for dudes—is a concept that entered the mainstream through hip-hop in the 1990s, and it continues to flourish today (see: A$AP Rocky, Future, Wiz Khalifa, among others). More hard rock are the sculpted silver skull-shaped rings, often by Chrome Hearts, which are rocked by the likes of that rascally pirate Jack Sparrow, known in his role as a civilian as Mr. Johnny Depp.
