Spotting a decorative comb or a bejeweled barrette on a Rodarte runway is somewhat par for the course. But Laura and Kate Mulleavy’s hair embellishments for Fall 2016 win a special place in our hearts. Burnished metal coronets adorned with cast-metal orchids—each sporting a multicolored gem center—sat behind the ears and on top of strands that backstage hairstylist Odile Gilbert had texturized with OSiS Dust It Mattifying Powder by Schwarzkopf before pinning them into half-up styles or low-slung chignons with pieces of what she called “whispering hair” left out to dangle in the front.
“How easy is this?” she asked, while weaving long branches of fresh burgundy-and-yellow blooms into each headpiece. “It’s between jewelry and flowers.” So, too, were the makeshift ear cuffs, strung together with wire and blossoms by L.A. florist Joseph Free. Worn with a deep aubergine lip from James Kaliardos—rendered in NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu—the look called to mind shades of Frida Kahlo with a gothic twist, completing the effect that Gilbert described simply as “romantic but naughty.”
