The tough-to-decipher Mh Zh is set to serve tonight
Pass down Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake tonight and you might just notice Mh Zh, a casual new corner spot in the former Purgatory Pizza space, right at the end of the block shared by Millie’s. There are tables lined up along the sidewalk, and inside the small kitchen is cranking out some fresh casual Israeli fare.
Mh Zh — which, it should be noted, is pronounced “mah zeh” and loosely translates to “what is it” in Hebrew — is the work of Conor Shemtov, who has spent time working at restaurants in Israel and elsewhere. Now he’s brought on chef Jayro Martinez, who has worked the line at places like 71Above, to execute a vision of easygoing Israeli and other Middle Eastern favorites.
The menu is still being worked out and will change often, but the general idea is to hit on comfort food classics that everyone can enjoy. Expect beer and wine down the line, along with almost exclusively outdoor seating. You can find an early opening menu here.
Mh Zh soft opens tonight for full service, with limited hours through the weekend. Expect dinnertime eats for now, with a jump into brunch down the line. Add in relative newcomers like Kismet and suddenly Los Angeles is feeling even more Israeli focused than ever before.
