With Valentine’s Day creeping upon us, love—or, at least, plenty of underwire—is in the air. Look to Spring 2016, where the bra took over the runways, ranging from the skimpy at J.W.Anderson to the bedazzled at Koché to the see-through at Gucci. But it wasn’t all sex-minded, barely there wisps of fabric: Dries Van Noten showed shocking pink and black bralets layered over patterned long-sleeve shirts for an abbreviated, more romantic translation of one of winter’s better styling tricks.
The key to pulling off this romantic layered look is to embrace its more leisurely, bedroom-ready aspects while being prepared to take it to the streets. Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany recommends wearing the top-drawer underpinning over a simple T-shirt to make “a delicate camisole less precious.” It has all the appeal of the boudoir without any of the possibility for being read as inappropriate. And just this past week, street style star Julie Pelipas gave Instagram followers an eyeful when she brought the runway to real life courtesy of a black full-cup bra over a simple gray knit. And after all, ’tis the season to wear your heart—or at least some lace—on your sleeve!
