A place for carnivores, vegans, and the gluten-free
After several months of construction, health-focused eatery True Food Kitchen opens its Pasadena location to the public today. Situated in a large lovely historic space that formerly housed sausage spot Picnik, it sports one of the area’s best patios.
Much of the seasonal menu is based on organic or local product, which means the meats are hormone-free, fish is sustainable (though farmed), and there are plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Think butternut squash pizza with housemade vegan cheese.
You’ll also find ubiquitous kale salad and roasted Brussels sprouts, though True Food’s signature kale salad can actually convert the haters, and the Brussels sprouts with sunchokes and toasted hazelnuts are a solid starter.
Despite the health focus, True Food’s desserts often come sweetened with cane sugar—not exactly anti-inflammatory. The restaurant also serves local beer and craft cocktails, albeit good, well-balanced ones made with fresh juices. But if you want a healthy mocktail, fresh green juice, Kombucha or organic wine, they have all that too.
Pasadena’s True Food Kitchen will serve lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.
