Watch Anthony Bourdain Flip For LA’s Booming Modern Mexican Food Scene

He chats with Eddie Ruiz at Broken Spanish in Downtown

Anthony Bourdain sure does get around. He’s often jetting from one city to the next, trying the food and immersing himself in the nuances of the culture. It’s nice to see him take the time, then, to step into Broken Spanish in Downtown for a recent meal with chef Eddie Ruiz and partner Robin Chopra.

Chopra and Ruiz are the creators of the since-shuttered Corazon y Miel, and have a lot to say — along with Ray Garcia of Broken Spanish — about the modern Mexican food movement happening in greater Los Angeles. From Maestro in Pasadena to the brand new Verlaine opening tonight in West Hollywood, there has never been a better time to, as Bourdain says in the clip below, once again reconsider the ingredients and price point that many of us have traditionally associated with Mexican cuisine.

Though it’s only a short clip, it seems clear that Bourdain really digs the food at Broken Spanish, and is intent on tackling the bigger issue of Mexican food’s cultural reinterpretation through the Los Angeles lens. Luckily he’s far from alone, as the conversation is one that many folks are having across the city all the time now — it’s just nice to see someone with the legacy of Bourdain take a moment to appreciate it for himself.
