Love, when it’s true, celebrates you for exactly who you are. To attract it this Valentine’s Day, you should dress the part. According to makeup guru Charlotte Tilbury, nothing is more romantic than looking like yourself, only better. She would know, given that she regularly creates natural-but-better looks for the likes of Alicia Vikander and Penélope Cruz. For a steamy date night, Tilbury advises going “soft and pretty and not too intimidating,” a balance struck with a focus on “beautiful, dreamy skin”; eyes enhanced with tawny shades of brown and gold; and a timeless, neutral pink lip.
Tilbury reaches for her own color-correcting Wonderglow primer to give what she calls “a Gisele supermodel filter” to the complexion. After that, your work could be done. But a light swirl of bronzer on the high planes of the face will provide a dash of youthful, sun-kissed warmth to your look. Lips lined in a velvety bisque shade and filled in with a hydrating swipe of rose-tinted lipstick have an inviting, just-bitten effect, all the better to kiss with. The eyes, says Tilbury, “can stand out a bit more,” with a subtly shimmering chocolate brown cat-eye swoosh and amplified lids in earthy shades of gold, khaki, and terra-cotta. One swipe of lash-multiplying mascara and a light-catching application of highlighter later and you’ve created the makeup equivalent of what Tilbury refers to as “dreaminess.”
