Just one day before she takes the stage at the Super Bowl, Beyoncé dropped what may be her most epic music video to date. For her new single, “Formation,” she balances atop a sinking police car, drops low in a brocade wall–papered hallway, and dramatically swings her hips in an empty swimming pool. But for all of her athletic prowess, it’s the hair that steals the show in her new music video.
There are wig shops, an army of dancers moving in sync beneath matching clouds of curls, and a very confident cameo from Blue Ivy Carter, who rocks her baby hair in an Afro, the way, according to the song’s lyrics, Beyoncé likes it. But the singer’s own golden blonde hair shines brighter still. Piled in romantic tendrils, rolled into buns, and woven into every variation of braid, it illustrates near limitless range in a mere four minutes and 52 seconds. The woman who carries hot sauce in her bag knows what she’s got, letting her hip-grazing braids catch the breeze out the window of a car like a declaration of freedom—delivering a siren call to grow out your hair if ever there was one.
