It’s hardly news, by now, that Los Angeles is having a moment. But Paris expat Hedi Slimane’s decision to hold the Saint Laurent Fall 2016 men’s show at the Hollywood Palladium tonight seems symbolic of a shift—a migration not merely bicoastal, but rather global, in scale. From Louis Vuitton’s Cruise presentation in the desert last year to the buzz around French-run galleries like M+B and François Ghebaly to Jasmin Shokrian’s ubiquitous “Je Pars Habiter a Los Angeles” T-shirts, there is, it seems, a new sister-city phenomenon afoot. Los Angeles isn’t just an increasingly popular plan B for stressed-out, space-challenged New Yorkers; it’s also, in the fashion-art nexus, attracting a growing number of Parisians.
If L.A. would seem to be the absolute inverse of Paris—culturally, physically, and sartorially—that’s sort of the point. “The difference is what is attractive to us,” says Flavie Webster, designer of the fashion line Cerre, who has lived here for more than a decade. “There is a sense of creative freedom here that I don’t feel anywhere else.” Or as artist Lucile Littot puts it, “It’s fake in a way, but that can be fascinating. It’s good sometimes to feel like you’re spending your life inside a cartoon.” The cities do, however, share a certain joie de vivre—an emphasis on food, friends and family, and work-life balance, or as perfumer Marie du Petit Thouars of Maison Louis Marie says, “a lifestyle conducive to indulging in the things we French people love.”
And though a number of them are making the scene, ask any French girl in L.A., and she’ll tell you they tend not to stick to their own kind. Rather, they’re drawn to the city’s diversity—and newfound cultural energy. “There is an effervescence that wasn’t there a few years ago,” says Rebecca Dayan, a French actress, artist, and model who moved from New York last year.
Here, a few of the French women—both recent arrivals and longtime expats—lending SoCal a fresh sense of chic.
