Though her surname may dictate otherwise, Ruby Aldridge is not baring it all on the Victoria’s Secret catwalk. And no, there’s not a green juice in sight. Instead, she’s probably in Bushwick, Brooklyn, buying milk at a bodega—and then taking a selfie of the whole situation. Sure, Ruby happens to be the younger sister of Lily Aldridge, but she’s come into her own as the downtown angel of alt-girl style. Just yesterday, she trotted down the Calvin Klein runway in all-black everything: slouchy tailored trousers and a décolletage-diving tank, topped off with a natty coat. Though it was slicked over in executive polish, the look wasn’t so far off from her day-to-day ensembles. Aldridge, who has an inky Shelley Duvall pout for days, possesses an aesthetic laced with dark undertones and a cheeky mall-rat bite. In other words: She may be the only one who can chicly pull off the skipping-school vibe in a short plaid skirt and streetwear top—and accessorize it all with a furry pink purse.
It’s the type of look that is red hot right now: Check Rihanna’s recent Fenty x Puma show at New York Fashion Week, with fat, swim-in hoodies and thigh-skimming lace-up boots, or Alexander Wang’s hit-the-bong references on snappy bubblegum-pink tops and Hot Topic–type coats. But Aldridge has been a proponent of those kinds of pieces well before they hit the latest runways, pairing a hoodie with some lush velvet flares, or wearing huge JNCO jeans with extreme crop tops. Sometimes her bad-taste–meets–good-taste sensibility kicks into overdrive, in the form of mesh layers thrown over a plain tank or a Hooters shirt (eat your heart out, Alexander Wang). And that cropped tank lewdly plastered with Hentai? It’s a Ruby piece du jour. Clearly this Aldridge sister’s street style is already earning its own wings.
